Before you rush out to get those front pieces trimmed, take the time to determine your face shape
Good News! Bangs have come (once again) back into style for the fall 2010 season. This means that you don't need to make any drastic changes to your hair to create a whole new image for fall. Bangs are simply the perfect way to breathe new life in those outdated hairstyles.
Before you chop your locks, figure out which style of bang is for you by determining your face shape. Here's a handy trick to figuring out your face shape. Stand in front of a mirror and trace your face with something that will rub off, like eye liner. Voila, your face shape appears!
Below is a list of face shapes, bang types and celebrities who sport them:
Long: If you have an oblong face then try to avoid any hairstyle that would add length to your face instead of width. Bangs that lie just above the brows would be perfect (they can be full or whispy!)
Celebrity with an oblong shaped face: Hilary Duff, Ashlee Simpson and Sarah Jessica Parker. Ashlee Simpson is a perfect example of a celebrity who plays around with her hairstyle. She has had every type of bang imaginable and each style looked absolutely stunning on her.
Oval: This is the perfect face type as it is very versatile. People with an oval face can experiment with a range of different bang styles which include blunt bangs, a wispy fringe and side swept bangs.
Celebrity with an oval shaped face: Kate Hudson, Beyonce and Hayden Panettiere.
Heart: People with a heart shaped face tend to have a very pointy chin. The trick is to draw attention away from the chin and more to the eyes and cheekbones. Avoid very blunt, short and heavy bangs but instead opt for a more wispy side-swept fringe.
Celebrity with a heart shaped face: Paris Hilton. Paris Hilton experimented with heavy blunt bangs before, however I guess she finally realized that those bangs only added to the harshness of her face while amplifying her pointy chin! Thankfully she's started to stick to a side-swept fringe and has looked fabulous ever since!
Round: People with round faces have to try to find cuts that do not add extra weight to their face. The only types of bangs that are acceptable are side swept bangs, but even then try to keep the bangs a little longer.
Celebrity with a round shaped face: Kate Winslet is one celebrity who seems to understand her face shape and stick with it. Her consistent side swept bangs add to the radiance she exudes when she walks a red carpet.
Square: the only difference between a round and a square shaped face is that the latter comes with a sharper shape. To try and soften your angular jaw incorporate a side-swept fringe to your hairstyle so as to even everything out a little. Also it's best to avoid blunt bangs.
Celebrity with a square shaped face: Angelina Jolie. Jolie ended up getting blunt bangs for her movie, Salt. If you look a little closely you'll notice that bangs just added to the square shape of her face.

Plus, bangs are great to hide pesky little (or shall I saw large) features like a high forehead. Opt for lush side-swept bangs to shorten up the length of your forehead. After all it's worked for Rihanna, Goldie Hawn and Rachel Bilson!
