How To Take Care Of The Ink
You're freshly inked and can't wait to flaunt your awesome new design to the world - well, except for your parents just yet. Before you go pulling off that bandage, though, read these tips for proper tattoo after care
Don't touch - The excitement of getting your first tattoo might find you a little over eager to show it off. Hands off! All hands on deck. Five second hand check. Paws off. Get the picture? For the first few hours leave the bandage on and refrain from touching it.
Gentle wash - Once you've mastered the art of abstaining from touching it, remove the bandage after the amount of time you were advised (minimum two hours) and use a very gentle, mild soap to cleanse it, preferably antibacterial. Rub it with your hand and not a harsh cloth or towel. Lightly pat it dry.
Protect from the elements - In the first few days of having the tattoo and letting it heal, be extra cautious in abrasive weather conditions like extreme heat or harsh winds. Don't expose it to the sun for prolonged periods of time and be careful of covering it with materials that have the potential to snag. After some time, when you're out in the summer heat use sunblock protection.
Tattoo products - Ask the tattoo artist about any ointments or lotions recommended for your tattoo, but steer clear of Neosporin. It's an effective product for scrapes and cuts but has been to known to damage the tattoo and cause red bumps on the skin.
