Best Contenders To Take Over Galliano
John Galliano is out for his potty mouth. ‘moment of
silence, please.’ But, as they say, the show must go on.
There has been buzz
about who will take over the helm at Dior
and fill Galliano’s big couture shoes. Here’s some contenders we think
have the chops for Dior.
Riccardo
Tisci
Designs
for: Givenchy
Perfect Fit: A smart business move, as Givenchy is apart of LVMH, which also
owns Dior. And unlike Galliano, Tisci is seen and non-controversial, but still
about to turn out red-hot collections. Tisci is among the few designers trained
in the rarefied trades of couture, and Dior is one of few houses in Paris still
maintaining the craft.
Drawbacks: There doesn’t seem to be any with Tisci. He is the fan-favourite and
number one contender.
Alber Elbaz
Designs for: Lanvin
Perfect Fit: Alber Elbaz has revived historic French label, Lanvin – remember
his H&M collabo? – That was more or a rhetorical question. Of course you
do.
Drawbacks: But could you stand the though of mass-produced money making clothes
and accessories with the Dior name? A desecration of an elite label.
Hadier Ackerman
Designs for: Haider Ackerman
Perfect Fit: Colombian-born designer is a budding star in Paris. Known for his
edgy, modern, and romantic designs. His collection was brought to Canada, and
is sold at 119 Corbo in Yorkville. It was also shown at the ROM.
Drawbacks: His work is recognized by fashion heavyweights but he himself is not
a heavyweight – yet. Some think he’s not ready for the big leagues. And
dividing his attention between his carefully nurtured label and a giant like
Dior might prove difficult.
Pheobe Philo
Designs for: Celine
Perfect Fit: Philo continues to push the minimalist esthetic that she alone
revived in fashion. She reminds us of the women designers in Paris before World
War II who ushered in a modern era of dressing.
Drawbacks: not in the realm of couture
Stella McCartney
Designs for: Stella McCartney
Perfect Fit: Beloved for their practical, polished and professional approach to
fashion. McCartney always presents sharply focused collections with the right
touch of femininity. She has an unerring instinct for knowing exactly what
modern women want.
Drawbacks: Not in the realm of couture.
Kate and Laura Mulleavy
Designs For: Rodarte
Perfect Fit: For years, LVMH has been looking to Rodarte as a possible
investment. Pitching to this talented duo could get Dior back on track, plus Anna
Wintour has reportedly been heard to have said they would make a good
replacement. They’ve also curated a show at the MOCA recently, showcasing
couture pieces they have created, including some used in the Oscar nominated
film,
Drawbacks: They are sisters.
