Teeth comes in all kinds of colors, from yellowing off-white to greyish ivory. And they come in all kinds of sizes and shapes - they don't always grow in straight and sometimes they even have gaps. But you wouldn't know it from watching television and movies these days.
According to The Los Angeles Times, the rise of "cosmetic dentistry" has plenty of us thinking that the only acceptable smile is one that's perfectly white and perfectly straight - even though almost no one is blessed with such a grin naturally. As anyone who's ever had braces or a retainer can tell you, achieving a set of straight chompers is a long and painful procedure. And if you've ever had the displeasure of professional teeth whitening, you know that getting that blindingly white smile is also an exercise in torture.
People used to come looking to get healthy teeth, orthodontist Dr. Mark Yanosky explains to the LA Times. But now, he says, "people come in and want well-aligned, perfectly white teeth with beautiful digital contours; they want a beautiful smile, beautiful facial aesthetics."
Is it possible? Probably not - those flawless smiles you see on the silver screen are usually the result of veneers, or fake teeth. We suggest you start embracing your imperfect smile instead - it gives you character, and as long as your teeth are healthy, there's nothing wrong with a little gap or a crooked incisor
