Confessions of a Feminista

What Your "Size Too Small" Louboutins Really Say About You

The term Feminista conjures up, for me in any case, an image of a feminist in heels; which is what I am. On Sunday, at World's Biggest Bookstore, I drooled over a glossy coffee table book of images from the House of Valentino. I walked out with "A Year in High Heels" by Camilla Morton with a forward by Manolo Blahnik. All this after an evening of watching "Sex and the City" with my best friend over a glass (ok, many glasses) of wine. We were watching season three; the one where Carrie dates the politician, admits she's never voted, and states that she's not interested in politics.

Despite my aforementioned "girly" girl tendencies - I cringe when people say that - as I do when women, sometimes vehemently, denounce feminism instead of making it fit. These same women will buy a pair of too small Louboutins because they're on sale and they "must have them". We're willing to wear ill fitting shoes, but scared to death of an ill fitting label. Even in the world of "label jars not people", I believe we need to reclaim the word Feminist. We owe it to women everywhere, to ourselves, to save it from being the new "f" word.

The political IS personal; just because one is not interested doesn't stop it from affecting most facets of life. And feminism, according to Oxford Dictionary, is "the advocacy of equality of the sexes". According to me it's the furthering of women's rights. What we choose to do with these rights is up to us, but the fight certainly isn't over and Feminism has as many faces as there are women.
Tailor the label and make it fit.
