Amazon Is Slammed For Book Choice
The popular online book retailer Amazon was in the news this week with a controversial seller on their shelves, called The Pedophile's Guide to Love and Pleasure: a Child-lover's Code of Conduct.
As is the case with most hot topics, the Internet was responsible for how quickly the news spread and was an outlet for indignant consumers. Reviews of the book on Amazon were outraged responses by mothers, teachers, and anyone else who had seen the site's advertisement of the book.
Amazon.com did not respond to a request for information. And, earlier this week had been defending their stance on censorship, claiming that they do not support pedophilia but that they feel they have no right to put a stop to the sales of literature they find objectionable.
However, the amount of traffic on Facebook and Twitter sparked by the offensive title lead to reconsideration. Groups and pages were set up to boycott Amazon, thousands of online social networkers took to their Twitter accounts to inform the masses of their disgust for the book and the company providing it. Amazon stopped selling the book late Wednesday, but have not spoken on the issue.
What do you think? Is this an issue of censorship or pulling the plug on the endorsement of illegal activity?
