CONTACT Attracts over One Million Visitors this May
Strike a pose Toronto. CONTACT, officially the world's largest photography festival, is coming to a city venue near you. Started by local gallery owner Stephen Bulger over 10 years ago as a way of introducing photography to new audiences, CONTACT has grown into an international, month-long celebration of everything that snaps.
This year's theme Still Revolution' explores how photography has been brought out of galleries and into the streets. Featuring the work of over 1000 artists at more than 200 venues across Toronto, CONTACT will turn the city into a gigantic gallery, with everything from corner stores to bank plazas becoming makeshift art spaces. Event organizer Morad Affifi describes CONTACT as unexpected encounters with art and explains whether it's in a café or baryou're going to be introduced to incredible photography for the entire month of May.
A recent preview night showcased some of the festival's most exciting artists. Headlining was Caitlin Cronenberg, daughter of Toronto's favourite auteur David Cronenberg. Her exhibit Iconic Beauty II celebrates Canadian female artists including Jill Barber and Christine Horne (pictured). Produced in association with local designer Rosemarie Umetsu of R.U. Studio, the moody black and white series is reminiscent of classic, high couture Hollywood and is sure to be a festival fave.
With hundreds of events, workshops and film programs scheduled throughout Toronto this May, everyone's certain to make CONTACT.
