TALK IS CHIC with Elaine Lui

Lainey Loves Andy The-Ahn

W: Describe your fashion sense.

E: I don't want to wear what I am supposed to wear. I'm 35 and there's this myth that [at this age] we have to cut our hair. I have really long hair and I am not about to cut it anytime soon. [That sort of] age profiling bugs me. Madonna is always being chastised for wearing this or

that, but who sets the rules?

[L - R: Tanya Kim and Elaine Lui at the 2009 Academy Awards]

W: Of all the celebs that the media turn into fashion "It" girls, who do you think has a the best grasp on style?

E: Definitely Kate Moss. She has a vision about her look that is like no other. It all goes back to [the fact that] you might hate it, but it is her own. All the other models are muse-like, but don't have a solid sense of style. I mean, Victoria Beckham just pulls out her credit card. It doesn't mean you are stylish when you're head-to-toe Hermes or Gucci, it just means you are rich. Style is about being effortless... For Kate, it's an afterthought. Victoria tries so hard, I am surprised she's not had a stroke.

Sara Graham, Fashion Forward
About the author:

When Malcolm Gladwell talks about “connectors,” he’s talking about Sara Graham. This gal-about-town made her mark spending five years in (and out) of publishing as Editor-in-Chief of Canada’s top teen magazines Vervegirl and FUEL. During the out part she created, designed and managed all aspects of Sister Underwear – a collection that was not only embraced by the Canadian fashion network of buyers, media and the public, but enjoyed repeat orders from boutiques located in the U.S. Although no longer deep in the publishing or fashion trenches, Sara remains curious and connected via her insatiable appetite for culture and travel. Sara also continues to produce fashion shoots through Project, her brand management company.
