Stop Twittering and Check Out Elizabeth Dyer!

Facebook, Twitter, and blogs keep us updated on new trends, fashion faux pas of many and new events taking place. We are inundated with all this information. In the meantime, with all this online interaction, we forget to take the time for ourselves and leave our media savvy world behind. Instead, we are constantly over stimulated and cannot even concentrate on our friends conversation without taking a peek at our blackberries or cell phones, so just sit and breathe for a second.

So what about taking some time off from our crazy world, to enjoy a moment and go for a walk or even head downtown to enjoy an art exhibition. At this point, you must leave your phones behind and take time to nourish your soul. Recently, I discovered a wonderful art gallery in Roncesvalles. The Barber shop has opened its doors a few months ago with the idea to introduce and promote Canadian artists from different academic and media backgrounds.

This month it presents three internationally renown artists: Elizabeth Dyer, Adam Hilborn and Courtney Wootherspoon. Once I enter the gallery and stare at the at the different paintings, I lose myself and my thoughts; which is why art is amazing because it allows you to remove yourself from your life for a few moments.

I specifically became engrossed in Elizabeth Dyer's style and technique of portraiture. Elizabeth has a way of including her emotions and nostalgic feel in all of her paintings. She focuses on the person and in its environment by carefully bringing in different elements to create different layers. Elizabeth likes to draw with pencil, oil paint and wall paper to create texture and depth to her personage.

She works mostly with the subject in his environment in the way that he/she poses, in the softness of his/her look and tranquility. She introduces a portrait not only by drawing a person but also by introducing us to a person in his environment and how he responds and acts. In a sense, she is showing the human condition in its environment and how it affects them.

Take some time for yourself to check out some wonderful artists that will be showing until April 30th.

Great article, painting is a great form of art that describes peoples inner emotions and perception of their environment. I look forward for more art-tips like this for the Toronto area.

Well done!
