Find Art Everywhere

altI bet you don’t consider yourself an artist. Maybe you call yourself a mom, or a teacher, or an accountant or a wife. Maybe, you’re well aware that you are superwoman and have named yourself accordingly, but I bet you don’t consider your craft, be it at work, at home, or even in the bedroom, a piece of art.

The truth is that a lot of what you do on a weekly basis is connected to the arts. Just think about your hobbies. Perhaps you enjoy painting, making music, or dancing - those are obvious ones.

However, if you knit, sew, cook, work out, write, antique, or even scrapbook - you may not immediately realize that your creations and actions are indeed good examples of artistic expression. Maybe your creation will not be hanging in the Louvre any time soon, but as long as it brings enjoyment to you, and anyone else you choose to share it with, then the invention has served its purpose.

To define art is a tricky task. Scholars have been working for years to nail down one, specific definition.

Many still tend to think that art is some inaccessible cultural entity that exists only for those who ‘get it’ or have tones of cash to spend on well known artists, both living and dead. Luckily, there are some emerging players in the art world that are attempting to make the arts more accessible to the common person.

One of these players is Station Gallery. I bet you didn’t know that Whitby Ontario had an art gallery. The Durham region is best known for its high number of factories (including a huge GM plant) and expanse of fields. However, there is an incredible art gallery, partially funded by the city located right beside the Whitby GO Train Station.

The Gallery is very involved in the local community and hosts an after-school program that provides arts activities for school-aged children. In addition, the gallery features work by local artists as well as collections that speak to the industrial nature of its surroundings- such as an exhibition featuring images of men working in a factory.

If Whitby is too far for you to travel then why not visit a local art gallery or museum or just take stock of the art that exists all around you that you may not have noticed before. For example, try walking a little bit slower on your way to work tomorrow and take in the amazing graffiti art on the walls as you pass.
