Got an office job? Lots of us do. Working in an office can mean long hours of sitting at a desk, pushing pencils or typing away on a computer, and - not surprisingly - it turns out that such a sedentary lifestyle isn't exactly good for your health. Just another reason to quit that soul-sucking corporate job and pursue the career you really wanted!
James Levine, a researcher at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, is a leader in " inactivity studies." Levine has found that sitting still for long periods of time sends your muscles electrical activity into a tailspin, which could lead to complications like heart disease and cancer. Levine didn't mince words: " Excessive sitting is a lethal activity, " he said. So are you doomed to an early grave if you spend your waking hours behind a desk?
Decidedly not! Making small movements like fidgeting and tapping your feet can help get your muscles working again, staving off some of the effects of sitting. Plus, many offices are taking the health risks of excessive sitting seriously - and installing neat fixes, like "standing desks" that let you think on your feet (literally). Standing desks have been around for centuries, but we're not used to them in our modern offices. If, however, you're tired of resting on your laurels all day long, a standing desk could help you stretch as you work and stave off some of the more harmful effects of excessive sitting.
