Is it Better To Just Back Down?
Is
it better to be right than it is to be happy?
The question seems like
it would come with a straightforward answer - depending on the person that you ask.
Some people prefer to be right, while others prefer to just be happy, allowing errors and wrong to go uncorrected.
However it can be difficult to
set our ego aside and remember that some things are just not worth an
argument.
Choosing
to be happy over being right does not mean that you always need to
agree with your partner. It does not mean that you need to ignore
problems, or forget about things that you feel strongly about.
What it
does mean is that you have to open yourself up to the possibility of
being wrong. It means that you have to learn when to let go, when to
compromise, and when to agree to disagree.
Instead
of worrying about who is the winner and who is the loser, consider the
nature of the fight. If you are arguing about something little and
unimportant, maybe it is time for you to concede a loss. If you are
arguing about a topic where no matter how much you debate, neither of
you will change your mind, it is probably time for you both to throw in
the towel and reach a mutual agreement.
Finally when the argument has
passed a discussion and heated up in to a full out fight, remember that
neither of you is currently right or happy, so it may be time to agree
to disagree.
In
relationships it comes down to a choice, you can choose to always be
right or you can choose to have a successful relationship. It is
important to pick you battles and learn to come to a mutual
understanding.
