Your
mother always warned you against moving in with a guy you weren't
married to, and it seems like lots of you listened. While many of
today's young couples decide to cohabitate long before they say "I do,"
plenty of people are finding that a long-term relationship works just
fine with both participants have their own apartments, says
Cosmopolitan magazine.
Sociologists at the University of Victoria are reporting that it's increasingly common for women and men to decide to live apart, even when they've been dating for more than five years, the mag reports.
"It's a new and increasingly common partnership form," one of the lead researchers, Laura Funk, told The Province. "It's a societal change."
Living apart gives each partner his or her own space, and makes things a whole lot simpler if the relationship ever goes south. Of course, if you're spending every night at your sweetie's house anyway, paying two rents might not make a whole lot of sense. Ultimately, deciding whether or not to move in with your partner is a personal decision that only you can make - no matter what your mom says.
