Surviving a long plane ride

altTaking a vacation this summer? You're probably going to have to sit on a plane for at least a handful of hours. If you're not into being stuffed into a metal tin and hurtled through the air at hundreds of miles per hour, you might not be looking forward to this particular part of the trip. But rather than staring at the back of the seat in front of you, we have a few tips to make that plane ride go by in a jiffy.

1. Pick up a good book. When you're engrossed in a great story, you could care less about where you are. If you can get absorbed in an amazing book, you'll forget all about how cramped your feet are, how hot the plane is or how loud those screaming children are. Pick up a page-turner at the library before you leave or drop a few bucks on a bestseller at the airport bookstore - you won't regret it. Plus, if you don't finish it, it can double as your beach reading - that is, if you're headed to a gorgeous tropical destination.

2. Rent a DVD. If you're bringing along your computer, you can "rent" a DVD through iTunes or other media-sharing services to watch during your flight. This is a great option if you're not interested in watching the kid-friendly film they've picked to show during your flight, and with a pair of headphones, it'll also help you block out other noise on the plane.

3. Take a nap. Throw that seat back, put your sweater over your eyes and say goodnight to the world. Sleeping on a plane can be uncomfortable, so if you want some help getting a little shuteye, you can bring along some medication that'll help you snooze. Alternatively, you can order an alcoholic drink from the flight staff - it'll be lights out in no time, and you won't wake up 'til you hit the ground at your destination.

Bon voyage!
