Conil, Spain: Vacation Hotspot on the Rise

Small Spanish Town Yet to Be Discovered

Fine white sand crunches underneath your feet as you stroll down an endless beach. To the left, the crystal blue water twinkles as the sun kisses the surface. To the right, the beauty of the pearl white buildings of Conil take your breath away. Situated only forty minutes away from Cadiz, on the Costa del Luz, Conil is a Spanish vacation destination relatively unknown to foreigners.

This beach town is easily accessible with buses traveling from Cadiz to Conil daily for only 3.55 Euros one way. Upon arrival in Conil, travelers can find an array of hotels and hostels at their disposal that are usually a short walk from the beach. Budget travelers can choose the option of renting out smaller apartments (40 Euros per day for double accommodation) with kitchens which offers the choice of cooking instead of eating out.

For seafood aficionados, Conil boasts an array of fruits de mer both scrumptious and easy on the wallet. A restaurant that cannot be missed is Los Hermanos, where people line up outside 10 minutes before opening so that they can be the first to order. In Spain, lunch time starts at around 2pm and lasts until 5pm; during lunch many restaurants have a menu del dia (the menu of the day) which features an appetizer, main meal, desert and drink for a fixed price. After lunch, restaurants close and reopen at around 9 pm for dinner. Dinner is made up of tapas which are small little dishes that are relatively cheap. But don't expect a menu or a waiter, at Los Hermanos the menu is on the wall and you order and pay at the bar.

Conil is also known as a great place for windsurfing and kite surfing. If surfing is more your thing, a short fifteen minute bus ride from Conil to El Palmar (0.95 Euro/one way) is where surfers go to find great waves. The buses between these two towns, however, are not very reliable and are frequently late; but not to worry, the distance from one town to the other is only 5 kilometers, so you can always walk!

After a long day at the beach, vacationers enjoy Conil's lively nightlife with many clubs and bars that offer cheap drinks, friendly staff and no cover. La Luna is a popular club with an open courtyard and two bars, palm trees, a sitting area and funky decorations. But remember, these clubs usually get busy around 1 am and stay open until 6 in the morning, so make sure you don't get there too early!

Overall, the little town of Conil has it all - nightlife, food, sports, beach, and amazing weather. Though it is a perfect vacation spot, remember to bring along a good Spanish language guide as many of the locals have a very limited knowledge of English.
