No laughing matter

altQuick, name three female comedians!

Could you do it? We can only think of a handful, and there's no doubt it'd be much easier to name three funny dudes. The gender imbalance in comedy is no joke. Women are outnumbered by men in almost all levels of comedy, and many late night comedy shows have only one female writer on staff. Jimmy Kimmel has one (his girlfriend), Craig Ferguson has one (his sister), and Real Time with Bill Maher has, not surprisingly, zero women on staff.

Is it because women aren't funny? We doubt it. We can think of a few ladies, like Tina Fey, Mindy Kaling and Amy Poehler, who prove that female humor is just as great as the guys. Comedy has always been a bit of a boy's club, and many jokes rely on sexist tropes, making it harder for women to break into the industry. But hey, we've gotten into just about everything else - we're doctors, lawyers, writers, actors, engineers, architects, artists and anything else we want to be. There's no reason we can't bring our unique voices to comedy, too. So keep writing those jokes, ladies!
