Closing the Gendered Pricing Gap

Do Women Pay More Than Men?

Ever wonder why your shaving cream costs more than your boyfriend’s? Same brand name, same volume of product, yet yours costs $2 more.

My brother lives in Los Angeles, and he manages to get his hair cut for $30. I live in Toronto, and I’m lucky if I can get a hairdresser near my head for less than $50. Why? Because you’re a woman, that’s why.

Marketers seem to think that women ought to pay more money for their hygiene products than men, despite the fact that women still earn 75.3 cents on the male dollar.

Gendered pricing isn’t cool, but now you can fight back. The people Ms. Magazine have started an online campaign to close the gendered pricing gap, a gap that steals hard-earned money out of women’s pockets.

Here’s what you do: the next time you’re at the drugstore, take note of the prices for male-targeted products in comparison to the female-targeted. Look at products like shampoo, conditioner, face-wash, deodorant and razors. Jot down the product and price, and then follow the link to share your example with Ms.

Simply follow the link, and help Ms. and WOMAN.ca fight the gendered pricing gap!
