Being a woman in an office isn't always easy. Aside from
the difficulty of picking out a suit that's appropriately professional
yet exceedingly feminine, being neither too aggressive nor too passive
and balancing your work responsibilities with your family and home
lives, now you could get the ax just for having a hair color that your
boss doesn't like.
According to The Houston Chronicle, 52-year-old Sarah Rawline spent years working her way up from a receptionist position to become an escrow officer and branch manager at Capital Title of Texas - a feat that could give anyone a few gray hairs, for sure. But when Rawline went all grey, her boss told her to dye her locks a more youthful color or risk losing her paycheck altogether.
Rawline's been gray since her 20s thanks to her genetics, and says she enjoys her naturally silver tresses. They were never an issue in the salad days of her career, but now that Capital Title of Texas is trying to project a more "upscale" image, Rawline was terminated - and her position was filled by a woman 10 years younger. Now, she's filing a lawsuit against the company for discrimination.
"I don't think anyone should be embarrassed or humiliated for growing older," Robert "Bigs" Dowdy, the Houston lawyer representing Rawline, told the Houston Chronicle. Well said, sir - we hope all woman can keep working for as long as they want to, without worrying about their physical aging being an issue in the office.
