Rally Up Your Girlfriends in Support of Ovarian Cancer Research

Women rally together in the face of adversity. Women bond over life experiences and learning. We like to get involved with social change. And of course, women love to shop. The co-founders of aWEARness obviously know how to tap into their audience's instincts and social responsibility. Co-founders Michelle Levy and Elana Waldman, created aWEARness as a unique charitable event in Canada designed to support ovarian cancer research. Why is this annual event such a Toronto society favourite? Because patrons get to satisfy two urges at the same time: the urge to make important contributions to women's heathcare while shopping for themselves and loved ones! What could be a better way to get into the swing of a positive spring?

Patrons and celebrity guests will attend at Liberty Grand, Exhibition Place on May 3, 2009 for the opportunity to purchase designer and high-end clothing at discounts of at least 50% off regular retail prices. Last year, our inaugural year, the event raised almost $250,000! It's a Clothing Hit Parade as the event offers Women's, Men', Children's, Shoes, Accessories, Bridal Wear, Sports Wear. All garments have been generously donated by designers, manufacturers and retailers.

Tickets are $100 for regular shopping or $200 for VIP shopping, which provides the opportunity to attend an hour earlier in order to have first choice of the available merchandise. What is not sold at the event itself will be auctioned on eBay Canada's charity site. All proceeds, from tickets, clothing and auction sales, are donated to Princess Margaret Hospital for ovarian cancer research.

Ovarian cancer is the leading cause of death among gynecological cancers. It is the 4th leading cause of cancer deaths for Canadian women. Each year, there are 2500 new cases diagnosed and 1500 related deaths. The 5 year survival rate is only 30%. Nearly all women die within 10 years of diagnosis. Since it is difficult to detect in its early stages, the survival rate has not changed appreciably in over 40 years. However, with early detection and effective treatments, it is possible to increase the survival rate to 90%. The difference is huge; yet attainable with sufficient resources for research. Princess Margaret is one of the 5 leading cancer hospitals in North America and is at the forefront of
research into early detection and treatment for ovarian cancer.

With your support aWEARness can ensure that research into the causes, treatment and prevention of ovarian cancer will continue, make a difference and ultimately, save lives.
