Feeling Philanthropic? Consider These Charities
Donating to charity is good for the world, and good for the soul.
Between phone calls, door-to-door canvassing, and appeals from volunteers on street corners, it can be difficult to choose where your donations should go. It can be even harder to know which charities are the most trustworthy and how much of your donation will truly go to helping the cause.
MoneySense magazine has created a grading system for Canadian charities using several different factors. Here are five charities you can trust when you are bitten by the bounty bug:
Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre Foundation
MoneySense gave this foundation an overall grade of 'A' for their fundraising in support of research, healthcare facilities, and equipment.
Chalice
This Catholic organization received MoneySense's highest grade in the category of international aid organizations. Chalice works to alleviate the effects of poverty in the developing world.
Second Harvest Food Support Committee
91 per cent of spending goes towards this committee's programs, earning it a grade of 'A' from the magazine, as well.
Nature Conservancy of Canada
Are you a flower child? Are you at home in the outdoors? This organization works to protect biodiversity by safeguarding sensitive or threatened land. MoneySense awarded a grade of 'A'.
War Amputations of Canada
In the long list of charities dedicated to health and health services, the well-established War Amps organization earned the highest grade.
