New Years Eve: Boogie or Bust?

Ring In The New Year With A Reality Check

altEvery December, people start to ask one inevitable question: “What are you doing for New Years Eve?”

New Years Eve, for some, is the biggest party night of the year. And, for that reason, NYE also has the greatest potential to let you down.

Because of this, every year I debate whether I should spend the night watching movies and eating take out, whether I should hit the town and paint it red.

Perhaps we all suffer from a case of FOMO (fear of missing out) on this one night each year. But, why?

First off, there is the venue.  It’s New Year Eve, so you don’t want to just go to any old place. You try to brainstorm ideas and come up with somewhere fabulous. Of course, this venue has tripled its cover and drink prices, because it promises to be such a special evening, and the line is guaranteed to be longer than life itself.

Then, there is the outfit. I mean come on; you can’t very well ring in the New Year in a recycled dress. So a fancy dress is required. Fancy, and new. (Do you see the dollar signs adding up like I do, yet?)

Finally, the kiss. Everyone knows that at the strike of midnight, you’re meant to grab someone you love, or whoever is closest, and swap spit. For some of us, this is a snap. For others, this brings about serious lip-lock anxiety. What if you’re the only one NOT engaged in a steamy smooch when the bells chime? Did someone see? Or, alternatively, what if your midnight kiss is kind of a dog? Champagne glasses have been known to trump those of the beer variety.

However, when confirming your plans for the “big night” there are a few things to keep in mind:

1. It’s New Years. It happens every year. If this year’s plan isn’t quite jiving with you, then skip it. You can always make up for it next year.

2. It’s YOUR night. Don’t go along with plans simply because that’s what “everyone” is doing. Maske sure your night agrees with you, and that your plan will result in not just their enjoyment, but yours as well.

2. Relax. Even if your dress isn’t new or your kiss never comes, remember that it’s just a night. Have fun! It’s just one more box on the calendar to cross off.
