Creative House Warming Gifts

Forget The Wine and The Plants, Get Them Something They'll Actually Like

altSo your best pal moves into a new house, and she’s invited you over to “warm” it. What exactly this mean, we will never know for sure?

Bring blankets? Bring fire? Probably not. But you are expected to bring a gift.

It’s tough to decide what to bring, or better, to know what they need. If you’ve recently been invited to a house warming party, here a few great ideas for gifts to give the new owners:

1. Cleaning Supplies
Seems a bit, um, impersonal - but getting the new home owners things to clean their house with is a really nice idea. When arranged in a fancy basket, a few sprays, j-clothes and air fresheners are actually a really handy gift.

2. A Welcome Mat
There are plenty of options when it comes to picking a welcome mat. There are funny ones, pretty ones, and yucky, black plastic ones that actually DO something. Find one that best suits the home owners and arrive early! That way, they can make use of it before all of the dirty shoes and eager guests come pouring in the door.

3. Coffee
One of the first thing people buy when they move into a new house is a coffee maker. After all, how else could they ever LEAVE said house without their mandatory cup of joe? Make sure to inquire as to what kind of coffee maker they have before buying your gift, because not all machines can roast the same beans.

4. A ‘No-Flyers Please’ Sign
If the new home owners are eco-conscious, odds are they won’t want wasted paper being shoved through their mail slots. Get creative and craft them a witty, yet effective sign that lets the paper boy know just where (not) to stick it.

5. Board Game
If they’ve got a house, they should darn well make use of it. Game nights are a great way to spend the weekend, but without games, there can be party. Pick up a Scrabble board, or a game of Jenga, and make sure you let them know that you’d like to break it in with them.
