Five Things To Do Before You're Thirty

Things To Do Before It's Too Late

I feel like thirty is a great landmark - one to say... let's re-evaluate. What haven't I done yet? What would I still like to do.

Because thirty is quickly approaching, I have come up with a list of things that I must tick off before the big day.

Travel Someplace By Yourself
Travelling to different countries and experiencing different cultures is stressful but extremely rewarding. Now, as fun as it is with friends or family in tow, imagine exploring a whole new world by yourself? Your new experiences won't be diluted by anyone else. Make your own schedule, meet new people – very little outside influence. Whether you make the sojourn completely by yourself or go as part of a packaged group (with strangers from across the world), it's empowering to be in that much control of your situation. Of course, always consider safety first – make sure you research the country before you head out, ask questions and get to know what areas you're better off steering clear of.

Do Something 100 Per Cent Selfish
Set your phone to vibrate and unplug the computer – when I say selfish I  mean selfish! The world should just have to do without you for one whole day. While I wouldn't call myself a career chaser, I definitely work hard and before my career finally does take flight, I want to find the time to indulge in things I'll likely miss out on when I'm chasing those brass rings. Book a full day at the spa (manicure, massage, hair cut, the works!), reserve a table at a fancy restaurant...whatever you do, don't feel guilty!

Invest in Something Frivolous
If you haven't already begun thinking about taking out a loan for a house or putting money towards your RRSPs (not to mention raising kids and running a household!), the realities are going to hit home soon. While you still have a little disposable income, invest in something you've always wanted. Not a Shelby Cobra, per se. More like, a plasma television or  those Alexander McQueen heels you've had your eye on.

Have A One-Night Stand
I won't say that this is totally necessary, but in a society obsessed with all things Sex & The City, it's surprising to me how many women have never had a one night stand. There's still this negative stigma attached to the concept – think drunken grope sessions and the walk of shame early the next morning (we've all witnessed it). But it doesn't have to be all tequila shots and black outs. It CAN be romantic and memorable. Out at dinner, a bar..maybe even on your single sojourn (if they did it in Vicki Christina Barcelona, why can't you?). feel a passionate connection with someone? Initiate conversation and see where it takes you. You might be pleasantly surprised.

Surprise Yourself
This doesn't have to be a “before your 30” thing, but you should start now (before you retire, at least).  There are so many things we want to do but we never find time in the day, week, month, year. Learn to skateboard, learn to knit, cook gourmet food, run in a marathon, climb a mountain - why not TRY? Even if you just try once, surprise yourself by what you're capable of achieving. Heck. You survived university, endless interviews, the job you had before this one. You've had boyfriends and falling outs with parents. You can do anything you set your mind to, so try something new. Who cares if you fail? You've got nothing to lose.

Hilary Lauren Fox
About the author:

Sometimes she's a redhead, sometimes she's a blonde. Some days it's H&M, and on other days, it's Chanel. What ever the mood, she is a woman who is passionate about the arts, fashion and social media. Born in Toronto, Hilary Lauren Fox is an only child to artist parents - mom was an illustrator and pattern maker, dad was a painter.  Rather then studying the arts as her parents hoped for, Hilary opted for a degree in psychology with dreams of working in a clinical setting. But after graduating she realized that the apple doesn't fall far from the tree and that the arts was in her blood, applying her education within the art and fashion world.
