On pink and blue, it's still nature versus nurture

altScientists in China have come up with a pretty interesting theory that could shed some light on years of baby shower traditions. According to researchers at Zhejiang University, women and men have an innate preference for pink and blue, respectively, as a direct result of hunter-gatherer-era gender roles, the Daily Mail reports.

The theory goes as follows: "As the gatherers of the operation, women's brains became fine-tuned to the purples and reds of ripe fruits and berries," according to the news source." The men, meanwhile, developed a preference for the clear blue skies that signaled good weather for hunting."

Sounds plausible, but all of this was based on surveying a sample of men and women regarding their colors of choice. Since we're pretty well socialized to like these colors in the first place, doesn't this logic seem a bit circular (loopy)? All of this does raise a pretty good point, though - gender roles have existed since the dawn of man, and they're not necessarily a bad thing. They have, in ways, helped us to survive as we became specialists in the areas our bodies were best suited for. Then again, we guess the researchers may have more work cut out for them before they can fully explain why " neurotic " girls preferred gray and introverted men liked yellow. Well, storm clouds, we guess. And sunshine - internal sunshine.
