Do you have to be a girl to run for prom queen?

altIf you've been watching Glee lately, you know that Kurt, the school's most flamboyant attendee (which is saying a lot, since this is the show where kids dance and sing around the halls), was recently crowned Prom Queen in a cruel jab at his sexual orientation. Although Kurt's feelings were hurt by what he perceived as a cruel trick, one real-life boy in central Virginia saw his nomination to the female side of the prom court as an honor.

Jake Boyer, an openly gay senior from Blacksburg High School, came out last year to find that his classmates were largely supportive of his sexual orientation, WDBJ7 reports. In fact, they were so supportive that they encouraged him to run for prom queen. He did - and he won. And to top it off, he came to the prom dressed as Lady Gaga.

Boyer told the news source that he felt his win was inspirational. "More than anything, this experience just gave me hope for the future," he explained. "Like, oh my gosh, this little town in the middle of Virginia is able to be this open."

Congratulations to the newly-minted prom queen!
