A Little Music Goes a Long Way When Chores Become Unbearable

This weekend, things got messy in my house. And I mean that literally. I opened up the fridge and to my horror, found everything dripping in milk. I buy bagged milk for my son, and for some unexplainable reason, it exploded. When I said I really wanted to see Milk, I meant the Sean Penn movie! Talk about a miscommunication with the universe. Everything was going to have to come out and I was going to have to be the person who dealt with it. UGH! I wondered for a moment how I could pretend not to notice the mess. But when I looked at all the food dripping in milk, well, it gave new meaning to the term "sour grapes". I couldn't ignore this mess (like I often do with garbage and recycling). So how did I manage not to cry over spilled milk? I got my Ipod.

Music makes me happy. And it can instantly put me in a good mood when I need it. My all time favourite song is the theme from the movie Rocky called "Gonna Fly Now". When I hear that song, I feel inspired, powerful, and unstoppable. It brings me to a place where I believe that I can actually do a chin up. I even considered walking down the aisle to it on my wedding day. But when faced with the choice, I thought it was more important to have my groom show up than have my favourite song played.

I've heard from a lot of moms over the years who LOATHE doing housework. I hear you sisters! The idea of having a root canal is more appealing to me than unloading the dishwasher. (I'd retract this statement if I could have Nitrous Oxide while unloading the dishwasher but until that becomes legal, I stand by my comment.) Until you can delegate your chores to your kids or you choose to hire a cleaning lady, you're stuck with them. So how can you make doing the dreaded tasks more enjoyable?Create your favourite playlist.

I have very interesting taste in music. I can go from Enya to Led Zeppelin all the way back to the soundtrack of Wicked in no time flat. My husband will never let me live down the fact that when I made a "Grunge" mix in the early 1990's, it included the Barenaked Ladies. So take my recommendations with a grain of salt. These are just some of the songs that make me want to bust a move, bench press or build an empire.

1) So What- Pink
2) Gonna Fly Now- Rocky
3) One Moment In Time- Whitney Houston
4) The Time Of My Life- David Cook
5) No One- Alicia Keys
6) I Believe- Yolanda Adams
7) There's Hope- India Arie
8) I'll Be Lovin'U Long Time- Mariah Carey
9) Con Te Partiro- Andrea Bocelli
10) Single Ladies (Put A Ring On It)- Beyonce

Laugh and judge my song choices all you want. But my fridge is sparkling clean, and it's because I had a little help from my musical friends.
