Fisher-Price recalls 10 million toys

More than 10 million children's toys including tricycles, high chairs, and toy cars are being recalled due to safety problems. This is the biggest toy recall of the year and a serious hit to Mattel who have had recall challenges as early as 2007. Back then, Mattel recalled 21 million toys because of excessive amounts of lead reported in paint used for children's toys while other items were reported to be choking hazards due to small magnets that were included with the toy sets.

With holiday season just around the corner, the timing couldn't be worse for a toy recall of this magnitude. However, some analysts have reported that the impact won't hit Mattel as hard as expected.

Sean McGowan, an analyst at Needham & Co, said that the latest recalls will be easier to deal with than the 2007 recall of lead-contaminated toys, largely manufactured in China, because the changes to the paint required changes to the actual manufacturing of the toy which were mostly still on store shelves. In this case, the recall is for toys that have for the most part been sold already and this recall, will not be as expensive to correct.
