Five depressing types of marriage

altWhile weddings are joyous affairs, marriages can be decidedly less so. With nearly half of all marriages ending in divorce these days, is your wedded bliss on its way to becoming marital stress? In her new book Marriage Confidential, Pamela Haag profiles five depressing types of marriage that you might be headed for - and Jezebel's Erin Gloria Ryan summarizes them thusly:

In the Semi-Happy Marriage, you're bored with your spouse, but getting a divorce seems like too much work because you're both settled into the routine. In the Parenting Marriage, you stay together with a spouse you don't love for the sake of the kids. Ed McMahon Syndrome has you agreeing with your spouse even when you inwardly disagree vehemently, just to avoid the argument. And if you're Semi-Married, you're in a state of indifference that's neither love nor hate.

Finally, you might be a Workhorse Wife - your husband's lifestyle can't pay the bills, so you're the hardworking (and resentful) one.

That might seem totally soul-crushing, but don't fret. We all know that there are still those married couples who are so sickeningly in love with one another that it makes single people cringe. You know, the ones who still hold hands and laugh at each other's inside jokes. No matter what Pamela Haag says, those couples exist - and maybe you'll be one someday.
