Marriage is tough, which is why nearly half of all unions
end in divorce. Of course, nobody wants to think that their fairytale
marriage will end in a legal battle over assets and kids - and
hopefully, yours won't. Now, researchers at the University of Iowa have
discovered a new predictor that might indicate how likely you are to
divorce - and it has to do with stuff you did long before you ever
thought of marriage.
The researchers found that women who lost their virginity before age 16 were more likely to end up divorced than their counterparts, who waited until after their 16th birthdays to first become intimate with their partners. In fact, explains Cosmopolitan magazine, "Of the female subjects who'd had intercourse at 15 or younger, 31 percent divorced within five years of marriage, and 47 percent split up within 10 years[, w]hile the women who had waited till at least 16 had divorce rate of 15 percent at five years, and 27 percent at 10 years."
Of course, correlation does not equal causation. Are you doomed to divorce if you got an early sexual start? We certainly don't think so. Still, it might be worth holding off on the sex if you want to ensure that your future hubby is really in it for the right reasons.
