New Airbag Helmet For Cyclists
What if I told you that you could ride your bike without a helmet and instead wear a collar that's designed to transform into one?
Well, that's what I'm telling you. If you don't know how you feel about the idea, join the club.
Two Swedish designers (as usual) have put their heads together to come up with an unconventionally unique (as usual) safety device. Presenting, The Hovding, an inflatable helmet. Designed as a waterproof collar, this almost fashionable accessory inflates around the head upon impact to form a trusty airbag for your protection. But the question is, would you trust it enough to use it? While the product has been tested for its safety and durability, the concept of this on-the-go airbag helmet seems a little....flighty?
The collar contains the bag and a sensor unit which is designed to monitor movement and essentially be on immediate danger alert. This means that once you go for a spill, the helium in the bag will instantly inflate and cushion your head in support, much like the spontaneous opening of a parachute. But let's not get into the horror stories of failed parachute launch.
The Hovding is expected to hit the market at over $400 when it goes on sale next Spring.
What do you think? Would you go for a bike ride trusting an airbag helmet?
