Trend Alert: Round Glasses

Harry Potter-Influenced Eyewear Is Everywhere

altMovies, like any other art form, often inspire trends in fashion and style. Think Ali McGraw's classic, girl-next-door wardrobe in Love Story, Diane Keaton's menswear in Annie Hall, and Madonna's eclectic street urchin look in Desperately Seeking Susan. Here's a more recent addition to that list: Harry Potter.

Forget scarves, capes, or lightning bolt makeup. It's Harry's perfectly round spectacles that have celebrities, fashion mavens, and design houses taking cue. The look is retro-meets-librarian chic-meets-John Lennon, and it works as an unexpected accessory to any outfit.

From the oversized and oblong at Dsquared to futuristic circular sunglasses at Diane von Furstenberg, round eyewear was everywhere during Spring 2011 runway shows. We loved the tortoise shell frames at the Tracy Reese show and the sixties-inspired candy-coloured shades from Cacharel.

From the runway to real life, many celebrities are also adopting the look. Lady Gaga, Sienna Miller, and Mary Kate Olsen have all been spotted donning round frames.

Want to make the look for you? For the vision-impaired, visit your eyewear dealer and look for styles similar to those of Giorgio Armani and Kala. If glasses are an accessory, not a necessity, try these oversized plastic faux-reading glasses or violet-hued sunglassses from Urban Outfitters - cheap and chic.
