Have Fun With Your Wardrobe

alt“We’re inspired by so many things, past, present, future. We hope our collections just feel pleasantly present-tense.” – Sam and Jeff of S&H

After helping found menswear line Trovata, designers and college friends Sam Shipley and Jeff Halmos relocated to New York in 2008, in search of a fresh start. Thus was born Shipley & Halmos, their eponymous line, which debuted to rave reviews for its simple pieces, focusing on fit and material rather than trend.

Since founding their line, the duo has shown seasonally during New York Fashion Week and collaborated with other designers: Philip Crangi, Loeffler Randall, Repetto, and Moscot. Both designers are active members of the CFDA, and sit on the board of the Scholarship Committee. In 2008, Shipley & Halmos received the Young Designer Award from the National Arts Club in 2008.

About The Line

Shipley & Halmos is always about the juxtaposition of the modern and the classic. They aren’t your not typical fashion designers, and a lot of their inspiration comes from both realms.

The S&H SS11 Line
Shipley & Halmos have a woman in mind when they design their spring line. They understand the woman is active and needs a wardrobe that's easy and wearable, but still feels light and feminine. Shirt dresses, wax cotton parkas, interchangeable separates like shorts, blouses, printed skirts and delicate knits.

As always, Shipley & Halmos deliver a spring with talent and personality that they so naturally exude. They’ve got us day-dreaming about the Varsity jacket, an American staple, using perforated leather for the sleeves. Leather is always a standout in their collections.

Keeping true to their design aesthetic, their womenswear speaks to their humorous approach to fashion. They put a giant blow up red T-Rex in their SS11 lookbook, and it totally works. The boys give a whimsical spin on spring staples that are wonderfully re-structured, easily paired as they are on their own as separates.

Reference Points
- florals - a print actually came from our love of New Order's album cover for Power, Corruption, and Lies
- stripes - which have a graphic component that's really interesting, but they're also something women look good in – our favourite: the black and white graphic striped tank dress
- colourways: rose, corals, blues, and whites
- straight organic lines – crisp, white, button down shirt-dress

They are pieces that really never go out of style, The line has a lightness about it, is totally feminine but never too girly, highlighting the line's playful approach to design. It’s clean and structured without being too serious. Shipley & Halmos teeter on that superfine line between dressy and casual. They strike the perfect balance. We love it that these are pieces we could carry with us through summer and fall. Great for layering, even in the winter months. A piece of Shipley & Halmos is a smart investment. We guarantee you’ll look effortless this spring in anything from S&H.

They’ve got menswear too! For menswear, they maintain a lot of the same shapes and silhouettes from season to season, so non-fashiony guys can feel comfortable. A Shiple y& Halmos man knows their fit and knows that if he wants a button-down shirt or a two-button blazer to fit a certain way, he can come to Shipley & Halmos. Those details are difficult to produce, but that's what's great about introducing something new each season - that you can add to what seems familiar.

Hilary Lauren Fox
About the author:

Sometimes she's a redhead, sometimes she's a blonde. Some days it's H&M, and on other days, it's Chanel. What ever the mood, she is a woman who is passionate about the arts, fashion and social media. Born in Toronto, Hilary Lauren Fox is an only child to artist parents - mom was an illustrator and pattern maker, dad was a painter.  Rather then studying the arts as her parents hoped for, Hilary opted for a degree in psychology with dreams of working in a clinical setting. But after graduating she realized that the apple doesn't fall far from the tree and that the arts was in her blood, applying her education within the art and fashion world.
