Middleton Is Set To Say "I Do" - But Who Will Do The Dress?

altSince the November announcement of Kate Middleton’s engagement to Prince William, everyone has been speculating about who will – and debating who should – design her wedding dress.

Rumors that she’s chosen a designer are circulating on the daily, though all of them have so far turned out to be unfounded. Bloggers and commenters on the topic of the undetermined dress and designer often sound as if they believe that the choice is their own.

It’s difficult to predict whom Middleton will choose, given that she’s known for her eclectic and unpredictable sense of style. But – though woman.ca is stumped – we have some ideas, based on her previous fashion choices, which designers may make up her final five.

1. Bruce Oldfield
This British designer has serious potential to be Kate’s choice. His bridal collection is at once innovative and classic, elegant and tasteful. Having dressed royalty (including Princess Diana) in the past, Oldfield recognizes the do’s and don’t’s of regal couture. When he was recently asked what his dress might look like should he be chosen, his answers displayed extensive knowledge of Kate’s style, personality and body type.

2. Julien Macdonald
Having served as the Head Designer of Knitwear at Chanel and at Lagerfield by Karl Lagerfield, Macdonald ventured out on his own in 2004. There has been lots of buzz that Kate might want to go with a newer, younger designer, and Macdonald is the only one in that category who comes to mind. Personally, I would be elated if she chose Macdonald. His pieces are incredibly fresh and youthful, and she would look stunning in one of his creations. It would be nice to see her going against the traditional royal grain.

3. Vivienne Westwood
She’s neither young nor new, but Dame Westwood has long been an object of the enthusiasm of Kate and the Middletons. As with Macdonald, the choice of Westwood would push the boundaries of the traditional royal wedding. Westwood, like Kate, has always had an unconventional sense of style – but her pieces are invariably classy and beautiful.

4. Daniella Issa Helayel
Having dressed Kate for a number of years, Issa would make a great fit – Kate probably feels comfortable and safe with this designer. Further, Issaa is probably quite familiar with Kate’s body, and could make a phenomenal piece. And since she designed Kate’s engagement dress, it isn’t outside the realm of possibility to imagine Daniella Issa creating the bridal gown.

5. Sarah Burton for Alexander McQueen
Kate and I share an adoration for the work of Alexander McQueen, and I think Sarah Burton (McQueen’s Creative Director) is another fabulous contender. McQueen’s pieces may hue to the avante-garde, but they’re also romantic and fairy tale-esque. I could definitely see Kate in a Sarah Burton for Alexander Mcqueen bridal gown.
