Five Frightening Truths About Pop

It's a horrible habit, but I'm hooked on soda. And, I have been ever since I had my first bottle of Root Beer as a six year old girl.

Then, I grew up, met Diet Coke, and fell in love. Truly. Madly. Deeply. It's been a hot and heavy love affair. Diet Coke in the morning, afternoon, and usually two with dinner.

But, after doing some research, the sad truth has come to life.

Soda pop and I have to break up.

Soda is unbelievably unhealthy, and whether you are Doing the Dew or Crushing on cream soda or orange flavoured pop, you're doing a serious disservice to your body. Here are five reasons to say farewell to fizz:

1. Pop contains high levels of phosphorous, which can significantly steal calcium from your bones. In fact, people who drink one or more soft drinks a day are twice as likely to suffer with osteoporosis later on in life.

2. Whether you're sucking back diet drinks or not, drinking too much soda can lead to weight gain! According to a team of American researchers, each soda one drinks increases their risk of future obesity by 1.6 times. Might not sound like a lot, but imagine you were 1.6 times your size right now!? Scary.

3. In most sodas there is an additive called sodium benzoate. It's a sodium preservative, and sodium preservatives naturally add excess sodium to the diet, therefore reducing the availability of potassium. This can result in many illnesses, including urticaria (rashes), asthma, and eczema!

4. There is so much sugar in one can of pop that excessive pop drinkers often find themselves struggling with uneven, pimply skin while. In addition to effecting the overall appearance of your complexion, pop drinkers experience higher than normal water retention and bloat, which for women can be particularly frustrating and uncomfortable during their period.

5. Soda, no matter what brand or flavour, is one of the most acidic beverages you can buy, at the store. It has a pH of about 2.5, which ranks on par with vinegar. Naturally, acid oxidizes whatever it comes in contact with, and if you spill soda or vinegar on a piece metal, it will rust it quickly. Do you really want that on your teeth, gums and in your body? Not me!
