Why Breakfast Is Truly Important
We
have been told for years not to skip breakfast because it is the most
important meal of the day. But as we rush to get ready, or hit the
snooze button on our alarm, suddenly breakfast no longer seems like a
priority.
However,
eating a complete breakfast sets the tone for the rest of the day. So the
next time you are considering skipping it, remember why it really is
the most important meal of your day.
After
sleeping, our body has gone several hours without refuelling its
glucose. Glucose is what supplies energy to our body, and it comes from
food. So by skipping breakfast, you are denying your body what it
needs to give you enough energy to get from morning until lunch.
Many
people purposely skip breakfast in hopes that this will help them lose
weight. Studies have shown that the exact opposite is true; people who
skip breakfast are at a greater risk of obesity. This is because by
going so long without eating, your body is desperate for energy and
also has an increased appetite, which both lead to over eating.
Furthermore, eating breakfast helps reduce our hunger later in the day.
Clearly eating breakfast aids in maintaining a healthy weight.
Finally,
eating a healthy breakfast helps increase attention, concentration,
memory and keeps you in a good mood. When we deny our bodies a meal, we
lack the carbohydrates needed to control our levels of serotonin. A
decrease in our serotonin levels affects our mental state, so breakfast
is crucial for our emotional well being.
So
next time you are tempted to get an extra te minutes of sleep, resist
the urge to hit the snooze button. With all the benefits of breakfast,
it is worth it to take the time and eat something that will improve
your whole day! Yum!
