Getting Back Into Shape

By now, many New Years resolutions have been broken if not nixed all together. The
goal of choice for most people is to start a consistent work out regimen
and change their diet. It's tough to maintain, and even tougher to
reboot once you've fallen off the wagon. Maybe this time around your
heart was in it 100% but the universe threw a few too many curve balls at your schedule, making it nearly impossible to keep up.
Breathe easy, it's not too late. Mustering up enough energy and motivation to get back in the saddle seems daunting but once you've covered day one, you're on your way. Here are some tips on how to make your work out an activity to anticipate rather than dread:
Take it Slow
Your
muscles and joints will be stiff after some time away from the gym so
don't push your limits for the first few visits. Whatever pace you
worked at before, tone it down a notch until you warm up to your regular
routine. Don't forget to do a good stretch session before you hit the
equipment. If you focus a lot of time on cardio, be extra cautious about
slowing the pace. Studies show that a break in our fitness routine will
cause a bigger setback in cardiovascular training than muscular
strength, so give your body time to recondition.
Make a Playlist
Nothing gets your body moving like your favourite jams! It's time to reload your iPod with some new tunes to
boost your spirits and get those legs on the go. Hint: work out music is
also synonymous with guilty pleasure music. Flashback to the '90s,
anyone?
Buddy Up
You know how easy it is to make
excuses to yourself and stay home with hot chocolate when it's time to
hit the gym. Pair up with a friend who will hold you accountable and
break down your apartment door to drag you out by the hair. Go together
and discuss weekly goals you want to achieve.
Find a Gym Crush
A quick scan around the gym to
check out the 'situation? We've all done it. Eye candy is a definite
motivator and you're sure to find it somewhere between your elliptical
and weight lifting. A sexy, sweaty, shirtless man with pecs of steel
should keep you lingering around until the facility closes every day.
Exercise on Your Own
Off time at home shouldn't
be completely void of exercise. To keep your muscles in good condition
do daily stretches. Physical activity during the week that will keep you
in shape without too much strenuous effort include yoga, pilates,
walking, etc. Stay active and maintain a healthy diet and going to the
gym won't feel so unnatural or out of the way.
