The Perfect Summer Snack: Guacamole

A quick Mexican dish that is both healthy and delicious

Avocados have been getting a bad rap recently because of their high amount of fat content. According to Calorie Count, one medium sized avocado has about 27.9 percent of fat. But wait! The fat found in avocados is actually healthy and good for the body. There are two types of fats; unsaturated and saturated. Avocados are made up of unsaturated fats that contain two necessary fatty acids; omega-3 and omega-6.

Guacamole is a relatively easy dish to prepare and can be a refreshing and filling afternoon snack or even a healthy breakfast spread on some naan bread.

Here is what you are going to need:

2 ripe avocados

1 tomato (chopped)

½ red onion (minced)

1 tablespoon (or more) of lemon or lime

1 tablespoon of cilantro

½ tablespoon of salt

Guacamole literally takes about 5 minutes to prepare. Mash up the peeled avocados with a fork in a bowl. Add the onion, salt, tomato, lemon and cilantro. Mix it up a little more. You can always add a little more lemon or salt to the concoction for more taste, after all it's not an exact science. And voila!

If you are saving the guacamole for later, remember to cover it up and put it away in the refrigerator. Guacamole tends to oxidize after a while and turns an unsightly color of brown. If this happens, just mix up the ingredients to get that green color back again. Happy eating!
