Want to drink a beer called Raging Bitch? If you hop over the border to Michigan, now you can. A small Michigan beer-maker called the Flying Dog Brewery has won the right in court to call its latest Belgian-style India pale ale Raging Bitch, an attention-grabbing moniker the company hopes will inspire consumers to pick up their product, AdAge reports. The label depicts a crazed canine and boasts the slogan, " Remember, enjoying a RAGING BITCH, unleashed, untamed, unbridled - and in heat - is pure GONZO." Originally, courts ruled that the bold marketing strategy used imagery and language "deemed detrimental to the health, safety, or welfare of the general public," but that decision has since been overturned. (We sincerely doubt anyone over America's legal drinking age of 21 would find the drink's label " detrimental," but that's just us.)
According to the brewer, the court win is a " victory for craft beer," but it plans to continue fighting to recover damages from lost sales. The company also hopes to set a precedent that could limit the state's ability to outlaw any beer it finds "offensive," a violation of America's first amendment - the right to free speech "We're glad that the people of Michigan are now free to decide for themselves whether Flying Dog's beer labels are, like the beer, in good taste," the brewer's attorney, Alan Gura, said. Will you be picking up a Raging Bitch pale ale anytime soon?
