Sony Walkman Not Dead...Yet
News broke out this week of a tragic death in the music industry, possibly one of the nation's most significant losses: the Sony Walkman .
Kids of the 90's have begun the mourning period, but reports have now surfaced saying that a final farewell to the remnant of nostalgia may be premature.
Just when we thought yet another classic technological innovation was on its way to being obsolete, it turns out that production of the 30-year-old portable cassette player is actually only coming to a halt in Japan, and will still be available in the U.S. Hoorah!
The Los Angeles Times spoke to a Sony spokesman who revealed that there was a consistent but small demand' for the player and no plans to cut it from the U.S. market any time soon. Phew! Although, if the Walkman had phased out with no prior warning, we doubt anyone would have noticed.
The device is an archaic keepsake, a trademark of our youth, but certainly not a competitor in the technological age of Blackberry and iPhones. For many of us who hold the Sony Walkman close to our hearts, we look no further than old cardboard boxes in our basements to relive the memories of Michael Jackson and Ace of Base on tape.
On its website, Sony sells the Walkman Weather Radio/Casette player with National Weather service broadcasts for $29.99.
Sony's description of the device says the Walkman can be used to "enjoy your old cassette collection."
As much as we love and reminisce over the simple joys of the first personal music player of our time, we doubt that an iPod swap is in the near future for us. How about you? Do you still have your Sony Walkman? If not, would you buy another one?
