Analogue in a Digital World
Last Thursday, WOMAN.ca attended the Toronto launch of the Lomography store on Queen St. West. The store itself is a bright space strewn in prints and decked out with crate box display cases offering a wide array of cameras, film and other accessories. In attendance were film enthusiasts mixed in with hipsters and cool kids waiting in a single file line for complimentary burgers and beers.
Despite digital technology making leaps and bounds in not only quality, but also pricing, the film market has been quietly creeping back into the mix. Thanks to retailers like Urban Outfitters carrying lines like Lomography with their collection of cool compact film cameras, and Fuji with their Instanx camera has helped the resurgence of film.
With stores in New York, L.A, Hong Kong, Tokyo, Seoul, Taipei, London, Berlin, Paris, Guangzhou, Xi Cheng, Chaoyang, Rio de Janeiro, and now Toronto, reinforces the idea that analogue can still survive in a digital world. Who doesn't love the nostalgia of flipping through old photo books and actually looking at prints rather than your latest FB album upload via a smartphone. Of course its not cheap to buy and develop film, but its still fun waiting to see how big of an idiot your best friend was the night before.
