To Tweet Or Not To Tweet

Top Four Reasons to Join Twitter Now

altIf you’re not already tweeting, it’s likely because of one of two reasons. Either a) you think it’s stupid, or b) you don’t know how it works. Usually, those who argue the former opinion are actually just concealing the latter.

I’ll admit, I was skeptical about Twitter at first. What’s the point? I thought, and what can you possible say to the world in less than 140 characters? Until I joined the club, I thought Twitter was just an endless stream of verbal diarrhea. But since I joined a year ago, I’ve discovered Twitter is more functional than you may think.

Here’s my top four reasons why you should join the blue bird club:

1. Social Awareness: Twitter keeps you informed. As long as you follow a credible source, Twitter can provide you with access to late-breaking news updates. Stay on top of current affairs by following the Huffington Post, The New York Times or The Toronto Star.

2. Social Networking: After you’ve exhausted your Facebook friend list, Twitter provides you with access to thousands more like-minded people. What’s great is that you can follow someone based on similar interests, as Twitter will recommend people for you to follow. Stay in touch with friends, family, and co-workers while collecting new virtual companions.

3. Social Commentary: The great thing about democratic forums such as Twitter is that you have access to loads of opinions from versatile tweeters around the world. Although these tweets can only be taken as small parts of a larger picture, they allow you to gather consensus opinions about a subject or event.

4. Social Stalking: Don’t be scared, I’m not talking about actual stalking, here. But Twitter can allow you to follow (read: stalk) your favorite author or comedian. (I follow Margaret Awtood’s tweets!)

Maybe Twitter is just a stream of broken thoughts and drive-by commentary, but perhaps—in a political sphere inflamed with rhetoric—we need a social space where less is more.
