People use Twitter for different reasons, and that’s fine. We use it too, everyday! There are just some things
on Twitter we’ve picked up on that are downright annoying. Do you use
Twitter effectively? Read on to find out what our top 5 pet peeves are on Twitter - and if you’re guilty of one [or all]!
Shameless self-promotion
Yes,
we’re only human and that means we like to talk about ourselves. Yet
social media is all about the conversation and sharing yourself, as
well as being engaged with others. There’s nothing more annoying to me
than a Twitter stream from someone that is nothing but a plug for their
latest blog post or product. Does it help the community? Are you just
pushing as much PR for yourself as possible? People will pick up on
that and be annoyed. Twitter
is a great way to market your stuff, but constant tweeting about You,
Yourself and You, might result in you being your only follower.
Hashtag, Sad.
Hashtag Misuse
Speaking of hashtags - the number sign # - we aren’t sure when hashtags
started getting misused, but they have become a secondary, sarcastic
voice to follow our tweet or underscore what we really mean, rather
than being used for their original, functional purpose - to start a
trending topic and allowing people to find hot topics more easily, but
putting a # in front of the word. Just say what your thinking,
#justsaying and leave the secondary voice out.
Tweeting every second
There
is nothing worse than having your Twitter feed being constantly spammed
by the same person. Twitter can be addictive, and you might feel
compelled to update your followers about everything thats happening.
You should only tweet if you mean to share interesting or relevant
things. Telling people that you are eating a donut will not change
their lives for the better. And they probably don’t care.
TMI (too much information)
People
often forget that Twitter is a public forum and that anybody can read
your tweets. This means that you want to try your best to refrain from
telling people too much information, things that they would be better
off not knowing. It’s obvious what this could be. The bathroom is a
good place to start. i.e., no one wants to know “I’m on the toilet
thinking about writing a third book.”
Open conversations
But
if you feel that you’re going to have a long conversation with a
particular user, can you use the DM option? You wouldn’t like me
listening in on your phone conversation, so why would you type it for
all to see? You are clogging up my Twitter-feed with information I’m
probably not interested in, if its a private conversation. Be aware you
are sharing talking space with many Tweeters. Be considerate. If its
personal, take it outside - phone calls and emails welcome.
Did we miss any? We’d love to hear if there are any other Twitterisms that annoy you.
