Like we needed a study to state the obvious, but a new demographic created by researchers at Hunch gave us some numbers to work with. And yes, stereotypes prevailed, reinforcing the perceived dichotomy between nerdy, unfashionable PC users and trendster, "I'm such an individual" Mac lovers. The most hilarious statistic? Mac users were 80 percent more likely to be vegetarians. Okay, and 95 percent more likely to prefer indie flicks. Well, we could go on to name a few, but you know the deal.
Mac users are younger, more educated, more urban, more "individualistic" - and they're also more arty, sociable, gourmet and so on. In light of all of this breaking insight and in the name of science and humanity, we challenge all of you to embark on your own ethnographic study. Next time you're working at your local wifi cafe, jot down some notes. What are people wearing? What kind of coffee are they drinking - fair trade or Starbucks? Messenger bag or backpack? Are they writing emails using their Hotmail server or chatting via Skype (and simultaneously taking snapshots of their conversations and posting them on Facebook)? If you can get close enough to see how adept they are at staying within the 140-character tweet limit, kudos to you.
