Could your iPhone hook you up with a new BFF?

altLooking for a new way to meet people? Your iPhone might be able to help.

Although your iPhone might be part of the reason you never talk to people anymore - with all that music and gaming, who wants to make chit-chat on the subway? - it may also soon become part of the solution.

According to an Apple patent application obtained by Gawker, the company is seeking to secure the rights to an "ad hoc networking" program that would track a user's music preferences, favorite restaurants, frequented hot spots and more to suggest other iPhone users nearby who have similar interests.

"Common interests and experiences of two or more users located close to each other can be identified from ... activities performed on the mobile device (e.g., songs downloaded), a trajectory of the mobile device (e.g., places traveled), or other public data available from the mobile device (e.g., pictures shared)," details the patent.

We'll probably stick to meeting people the old-fashioned way.
