Chastity Bono Becoming a Sonny

Cher Moves Up A Few Notches In the LGTB Community. Your Move, Madonna.

If she could turn back time Cher's lesbian daughter would rather have been born a man. So Chastity Bono, or Chaz, as he now calls himself, is undergoing a sex change.

Bono, the child of legendary entertainers Sonny and Cher, began the process earlier this year, shortly after his 40th birthday.

Yes, it's true Chaz, after many years of consideration, has made the courageous decision to honor his true identity, says his publicist, Howard Bragman. "He is proud of his decision and grateful for the support and respect that has already been shown by his loved ones. It is Chaz's hope that his choice to transition will open the hearts and minds of the public regarding this issue, just as his 'coming out' did nearly 20 years ago."

He adds, "We ask that the media respect Chaz's privacy during this long process as he will not be doing any interviews at this time."

Sure, no interviews, but reportedly Cher and her offspring were reportedly shopping around the very painful operation around as a reality-TV show earlier this year. Not exactly the most "private" way to go about it, eh? The show was a no-go but we cynically assume that Chaz will be chatting to People and the rest of the media hordes soon enough. Hey, he has to find a way to pay the $100,000 tab for the operation somehow.

You'd think Cher would be the coolest, most liberal mother in the world but she's spoken publicly about the difficult time she had accepting that her daughter was gay. But we have a feeling surgical alterations are something Cher can easily relate to.
