The Ugly Truth: Everyone Hates Katherine Heigl, Even Newsweek

No Doubt Grey's Anatomy Producers Regret Letting Izzie Live

This week Newsweek asks: Why Is Katherine Heigl So Annoying? a question many of us may have asked ourselves once or twice.

Newsweek wonders: The Grey's Anatomy star was supposed to be America's new sweetheart. Now we've all turned on her. Is it her fault, or ours?

Is that a trick question? Hmmm, using the Process of Elimination we learned from cramming for our SATs back in the day, our guess is "A."

Yay, two points!

Last week on Letterman, Heigl was behind the wheel of the Bitch-mobile and whined that Grey's Anatomy producers *forced* her to work 17 hours during the cast's first day back on set, "Our first day back was Wednesday and it was -- I'm going to keep saying this because I hope it embarrasses them -- a 17-hour day which I think is cruel and mean."

To be clear, Heigl just means she was there for 17 hours. It's not like she was hand-sewing buttons on costumes for 11 cents an hour, building sets or doing whatever it is grips do or anything. No, for the most part she was sitting around in her comfy air conditioned trailer chowing down on craft services and sucking ash. Other people were working for 17 hours, and she was just in the vicinity, but Heigl would like credit for that as well.

What she neglected to add was this: This cruel shooting schedule was only to accommodate HER and her needs. According to New York Magazine:

"The producers graciously shuffled things around so she could go off and do promotion for her new film. Also, with union rules, the producers had to pay a ton of overtime and penalties to make this happen. The thanks they get is Katherine Heigl going on national television hoping to embarrass them."

Boy, are they going to eat their words when she's nominated for a Best Actress Oscar for her role in The Ugly Truth as a modern champion of feminism who wears vibrating underwear.

Gloria Steinem who?

Bzzzzzz . . .

Firstly Heigl was clearly joking to anyone who watched Letterman - there was no malice or gripe in anything she said. It was light hearted and fun.

It is clear to me and quite sad really that there is a backlash against her because she is honest, strong and outspoken. If she were a male actor her strength would be applauded instead she is labelled as an ingrate or a diva.

If anyone else had of said those comments they would have not even registered a blip. Heigl is currently the media punch bag and everything she says is micro analysed. It is unfair and almost malicious that she has been targeted in this way.

The Knocked Up comments would be a great example - all you ever see is the one sentence where she said she thought it was a little sexist and explained why - followed by all the diva / ungrateful headlines. In reality what happened if she was asked if she felt there was any sexism in the movie because of the way the female characters were written. She responded as is documented, but also added that she hoped women would understand the characters were exaggerated and that was what helped generate the humor. She added it was one of the best filming experiences of her career. Wow doesn't she sound ungrateful when you get the full picture. No.

Yes Katherine Heigl voices her opinions and should expect some reaction that, but she has been poorly treated and more worryingly received little support from female journalists. It is no wonder there are such poor roles and jobs for women in the entertainment industry.
