Yet Speidi Lives On . . .
Well, damn.
The 2009 Summer of Death continues with the surprising news that celebrity record scratcher DJ AM, real name Adam Goldstein, was found dead this afternoon in his New York apartment.
He was 36.
According to reports, friends went to check on him after they hadn't heard from him in several days. Police were called when there was no response after knocking on his door. His body was discovered when they broke down the door.
Initial reports hint at a drug overdose; anonymous sources tell both the New York Post and TMZ that drug paraphernalia was found next to Goldstein's body in his Lafayette Street apartment.
Goldstein, who along with Travis Barker survived a fiery plane crash that killed four others last year, required three surgeries after suffering second- and third-degree burns to his hands and head.
To survive a horrific plane crash only to die of a drug overdose a year later...tragic and sad.
Press accounts have referenced DJ AM's Twitter stream, where the last entry, dated Tuesday, is a reference to a Grandmaster Flash song, reading, "New York, New York. Big city of dreams, but everything in New York ain't always what it seems."
And in an eerily ironic twist, Goldstein had recently finished shooting an eight-episode series for MTV about addiction, Gone Too Far, in which he opened up about his past struggles with substance abuse.
A decade or so earlier, Goldstein had attempted suicide amid a struggle with drug addiction before entering recovery and maintaining a sober life for close to 10 years.
But the silver lining: Abe Vigoda is still alive!
