Makes Sense, His Dancing In Red Dawn Was AMAZING!
Thanks to the hormonal appeal of sweaty, pretty boys who can jete like Rum Tum Tugger, a curious cat, dance flicks like High School Musical and the upcoming Fame reboot have shaken down millions of teens for their spare change after their latest crappy Hot Topic purchase.
But other than the abs and floppy hair, name ONE memorable dance move in any of them. Go ahead, we dare you. Uh, maybe we shouldn't have mentioned the ripple-y six-packs. Focus people, focus!
Rewind 22 years. Summer 1960-ish. Baby's family vacation in the Catskills. And a dance move that left audiences entranced: The famous "lift," where Patrick Swayze lifts co-star Jennifer Grey high above his head seemingly without effort in the climactic dance scene.
Zac Efron would totally have wussed out and pulled a bicep muscle or something.
It's a total wish-fulfillment fairy tale moment where the average-looking girl, quite against all the odds, manages to win the love of the ridiculously hot guy...who happens to go shirtless in several scenes and is quite pleasingly muscular.
What's not to love?
It's like living in a beautiful storybook where you can fly if you want to, you can reach up and grab a star, Swayze once said, explaining why dancing is so magical.
More than two decades after Swayze splashed around with Grey, making every girl swoon with jealousy, millions have watched the film and have attempted to recreate the move have found it's not as easy as Swayze made it look.
YouTube
is crammed with videos of giggling couples' attempts to copy the lift,
at weddings, in gardens and in the relative safety of the swimming
pool. And there's even a "Dirty Dancing" Lift Machine that lets movie fans get "Baby"-ed but without
accidentally dropping you in the water during practice like Swayze.
We swear we're not making that up.
According
to People.com, next Wednesday's live results show of "Dancing With the
Stars" will feature a tribute to Swayze, a classically trained ballet
and jazz
dancer turned actor, who died at age 57 on Monday after losing his battle with pancreatic cancer.
He guested on season one of Dancing when he dropped in on his buddy John O'Hurley's rehearsal to teach him some moves in 2005. Swayze was one of the few people to integrate dance with being an A-list actor, said executive producer Conrad Green. Season 9 of Dancing With the Stars premieres Monday, Sept. 21.
Swayze's courage and legendary talent will forever be uplifting--both with and without a mechanical assist.
Oh, and as a sign of respect, can we finally squash the really, really horrifically bad idea of a Dirty Dancing remake?By Paige Muller
