Paris Hilton isn't the only one who got caught with her hand in the cookie jar

Paris Hilton, was stopped by police in Corsica, a French island in the Mediterranean, on July 18th 2010. Apparently police shortly detained the heiress after finding less than a gram of cannabis in her purse. This is the second time (in less than a month!) Paris has been allegedly linked to the drug as she was rumored to have been caught smoking a joint during the Brazil-Netherlands quarter-final match during the World Cup in South Africa. The American socialite has however denied any involvement with the drugs in both instances.

This isn't the first (and certainly not the last) time a celebrity has been linked to the infamous cannabis plant. Here a list of top five celebrities who were arrested for drug possession:

5. Chace Crawford. In June 2010 Chace was arrested in Texas for marijuana possession. The police found the Gossip Girl heartthrob with less than 2 ounces of the drug in an unlit joint. Fortunately for him he was only charged with a misdemeanor.

4. Mischa Barton: in 2007 the former OC star was found driving around intoxicated and high. She was put on probation for three years after she was charged with two misdemeanors and a DUI.

3. Snoop Doggie Dog. Surprise, surprise. In 2006 the police were initially arresting the rapper for parking in a loading zone. While arresting him, police found marijuana and a fire-arm in his possession. A couple of months later he was busted again for possession of the same drug.

2. Queen Latifah. She cleaned up quite nicely in the last few years, but this reformed diva was arrested in 1996 for possession of marijuana and a loaded hand gun. The result? A fine and two years of probation.

1. Matthew McConaughey. In 1999 police responded to a noise complaint in the middle of the night only to find this Hollywood heartthrob smoking cannabis while playing the bongos ...naked. What a sight that must have been!

Nonetheless, don't be too quick to judge. It seems as if people have been smoking cannabis for thousads of years. In 2008 the Toronto Star reported that archaeologists found a 2,700 year old tomb of a Shaman in the Western Xinjiang province of China. Within the tomb these scientists found an interesting pouch that housed 789 grams of dried cannabis that was perfectly preserved. It seems as if the cannabis might have been used for medicine or for visionary purposes. Strange
