Hollywood Breakups We Didn't See Coming

Oh, Hollywood romance.

Scan the magazines in the grocery store checkout line and you'll notice that somewhere on each cover page is a story about a celebrity relationship - which loves appears to be fizzling, who cheated on who, and whose getting divorced.

Thanks to a steady influx of gossip delivered by magazines, Perez Hilton, and TMZ, us regular folk feel as though we KNOW these celebrities. Which is why when news of a celebrity divorce breaks, we react with genuine sadness and disbelief.

Here are five celebrity splits of 2010 that had us saying "What?!"

Sandra Bullock and Jesse James
Women across the globe felt a communal sense of scorn when the news of James' infidelity broke. How could he!? Sandra was our girl! This breakup became even more scandalous when just months after going their separate ways, James was seen making out with tattoo queen Kat Von D.! Bullock is also moving on with a new man: her son, baby Louis.

Christina Aguilera and Jordan Bratman
The partnership between the sexy songstress and the geeky music marketer seemed like a mismatch from the start, but after five years together, we thought their marriage was the real thing. Their divorce has the rumour mill swirling: according to sources, the two had an open marriage and Aguilera may have been enjoying some lady love on the side. Divorces aren't pretty at the best of times, but we have a feeling this one could get messy.

Jenny McCarthy and Jim Carrey
This goofy couple (they once swapped bathing suits and strolled down the beach hand-in-hand) had us rooting for them. Carrey's close relationship with McCarthy's autistic son was highly endearing, and both routinely praised each other and their relationship in the press. Carrey tweeted the news of the breakup in April, saying "I'm grateful 4 the many blessings we've shared and I wish her the very best! S'okay!" McCarthy had a similarly sweet message, saying in a statement "I will continue to be in his daughter's life and will always keep Jim as a leading man in my heart." Aww!

Courteney Cox and David Arquette
Eleven years might as well be a 100 years in Tinsel Town time, making the dissolution of Cox's and Arquette's marriage especially surprising. Only days after the couple announced their separation, Arquette took to Howard Stern's radio show to spill his guts about the couples' issues. Yikes! She didn't have sex with you for months, David? Geez. With a blabbermouth like that we wonder why. Not.

Kate Winslet and Sam Mendes
With seven years of marriage and two Oscar wins between them, Winslet and Mendes announced their split earlier this year. A statement released by their lawyers said that both Winslet and Mendes were saddened but that the split was amicable. The couple will continue to co-parent their son and Winslet's daughter from a previous marriage. Titanic fans everywhere are praying for a Leo/Kate romance.
